In het eerste hoofdstuk bieden de auteurs een theoretisch kader aan waarin de vraag "wat is nieuws?" centraal staat. Zij leggen hiermee het fundament voor de journalistieke wetenschap, een in het Nederlands taalgebied nog nauwelijks ontgonnen terrein. Het tweede hoofdstuk gaat in op de eigen aard van de nieuwsteksten voor de radio. Behalve theoretische noties biedt dit hoofdstuk ook veel voorbeelden uit de praktijk, opdrachten en oefenmateriaal, o.a. ontleend aan de telexinformatie van het ANP. De nieuwsteksten voor tv komen in het derde en laatste hoofdstuk aan de orde. Ook hier een mix van theorie en praktijk. Boeiend zonder meer is het concrete verslag van de auteurs over hoe het toegaat bij het NOS-journaal, Achter het Nieuws en een documentaire reportage van Frank Diamand, tv-programma's waarvan zij de makers letterlijk enkele dagen op de voet gevolgd hebben.
